Five offline RPGs that don't nag you to reconnect

Offline RPGs are a strange category. So many claim to work without a connection but still throw up errors the moment you lose signal. After a lot of testing, I've collected the ones that genuinely respect an offline player.

Top of my list is anything turn-based with local saves and no energy system. Ashen Crownlands is my current favourite — deep enough to sink hours into, but readable enough to play in short bursts. The key is that it never punishes you for putting it down.

When you're picking an offline RPG, check two things: does it force a login, and does it use a stamina meter? Both are red flags for a smooth offline experience. A good offline RPG lets you play at your own pace, full stop.

My advice is to download and immediately switch to airplane mode. Play for twenty minutes. If nothing complains, you've probably found a keeper. If a wall pops up asking you to connect, uninstall and move on.

The best of these games feel like carrying a small console in your pocket. No ads mid-battle, no waiting — just a story that's there whenever you open it.
